In 1988, Ocean Software developed and released ports of arcade Contra for popular at that time 8-bit home computers. These games were available in the form of magnetic cassettes and floppy disks, while they differed slightly depending on the hardware of the computer. Two of the three versions were released only in Europe.
Review
Of all versions of Gryzor from Ocean Software, the version for Amstrad CPC looks the most similarly graphically to the original arcade game, however in this version there are a number of pretty strong differences.
First, the game does not have a smooth scrolling - the levels are covered by separate screens.
Secondly, in the game there are only two tunes - music from the base, playing most of the time, and music from the credits. A similar set of music is present in other versions of Gryzor. Music and sound effects can not be played simultaneously.
Thirdly, the management is rather inconvenient. So, the actions "sit down" and "jump off" are performed by the same button, depending on the shooting. A similar situation with the actions of "jump" and "shoot up". This is due to the fact that the joystick had only one button.
Fourth, the structure of some levels is different, and some elements, for example, the snow section, simply do not exist. There is also no fire cannon.
Fifth, in this version there is an exclusive very pessimistic ending.
Multiplayer is similar to the arcade version - players pass levels in turn.
In general, this is a good port. But the above shortcomings and a nightmare ending spoil the whole impression.
Arsenal
Arsenal is almost the same as the arcade version, but the Fireball Gun is missing.
Plot
Durrs from the planet Suna penetrated to Earth and, having settled in the unexplored areas of the planet, built an Atmosphere Processing Plant (APP), which enables them to manage weather conditions. Their plan is to establish a new ice age - so they can capture the Earth and all its resources. Lance Grisor, a member of the Federation for Earth Defense (FED), was sent to destroy the Durra. After fierce battles, he fulfilled his mission.
Unfortunately, after the destruction of the heart, self-destruct mechanism, which destroyed the Earth, was launched.
