The story takes place 3 years before the events of Ninja Gaiden (NES), the player takes on the shoes of Ryu Hayabusa, who has to save New York City from the forces of Emperor Garuda, a servant of Jaquio. Among Garuda's henchmen are the Arachdroid, boxer Gregory and his manager Jack, the Colonel, Reserve Commander, Allen, and the Japanese nobleman Whokisai.

Gameplay

Shadow Warriors features simplified gameplay mechanics compared to the NES editions of the trilogy. In contrast to the variety of ninja abilities and powers available in NES games, here Ryu only has a basic sword attack and a Fire Wheel attack that can recharge up to 5 uses. In this edition Ryu cannot climb or cling to walls, unlike the NES edition, but he can hang from the railings and move under them, as in Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom. He also can attack while hanging from the hook. As in the NES editions, Ryu can find health potions, refills for the Fire Wheel, and additional lives.
