The battles in the game are usually random. Battles take place on a separate 2D screen in real time and to some extent resembles a fighting game. During the battle, it is possible to pause to use an item or spell, give a command to other characters (controlled by AI), or change battle tactics.
In the SNES version, the player has five playable characters: Cress, Chester, Mint, Claus and Arche. Starting with the PlayStation version, another character is added to them - the young ninja Suzu. Claus has the ability to summon creatures in battles that join the heroes as you progress through the game. The cities and dungeons visited by the player are 2D, while the world map is drawn in 3D space.
The protagonist of the game, Cress Albane, as well as his friend Chester Burklight, are residents of the small village of Toltus. Returning from the hunt, they find their village destroyed by the black knight Mars and his soldiers. All residents are killed, including Cress's parents and Chester's sister. To find out what his mother was trying to tell before her death, Cress goes to the city of Euclid to his uncle. However, he betrays him, and the minions of Mars grab Cress and throw him in prison, taking the family medallion from him. It turns out that Cress's father, Miguel, was one of four warriors who defeated the evil king of Dhaos and cast a spell on him with the help of 2 medallions, one of which Miguel took and gave Cress for his birthday.
In prison, Cress meets a girl named Mint Adenade, with whom they escape from the dungeon, in which they are helped by the deceased mother of Mint, Meryl, who also participated in the battle with the Dhaos. At the home of Trinicus D. Morrison, another of the four warriors, they meet Chester again. Following Tornyx, they go to the underground mausoleum, hidden in a cave, where they expect to find Mars. But the heroes are late: the villain has already freed the Dhaos, who, as it turns out, has his own plans. He deceives Mars and kills him, after which he tries to attack the team of heroes, but Chester takes the blow. Since there is no way to resist the Dhaos, Mr. Morrison sends Cress and Mint 100 years into the past, where they can receive magical power to fight the Dhaos. In the past, they meet Claus F. Lester, a spirit summoning specialist who, along with the heroes, are involved in an undertaken adventure. On the way, they are joined by the half-elf Arche Klein, originally possessed by the spirit of her friend Lia, who died in the capture of the village of Harmel by the Dhaos assistant Demitel.
Arche's father Bart guides the heroes to the World Tree. There they find out that all magical energy is stored in this tree. Cress recalls that while hunting with Chester, he saw the Tree no longer so blooming and rich in power, that is, the magic will completely disappear in 100 years. And this means that in order to defeat Dhaos, it is also necessary to save this tree.
