The plot revolves around young pilot Hikaru Ichijyo, his Macross love interest Misa Hayase, and aspiring singer Lynn Minmay. This story takes place against the backdrop of a merciless war between humans and the Zentradi (male giants), who command a space fleet of millions of ships. Zentradi and Meltandi (female giants) live separately from each other and are enemies of each other. During the war, almost all life on planet Earth with all its inhabitants is destroyed. Only the crew of Macross and its inhabitants remain alive. During this war, Misa Hayase and Hikaru Ichijyo find themselves on a war-scorched Earth, where they find the Protoculture fortress city and signal Macross.
